Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) is a systematic, cognitive-behavioral approach that provides step-by-step treatment strategies that are designed to enhance self-image, promote emotional growth, and facilitate the development of higher stages of moral reasoning. All of these goals are ultimately demonstrated by more appropriate behavior on the part of the program participants. The program focuses on completing 12 steps that participants complete at their own pace but are still held accountable. The steps include such principles as trust, honesty, acceptance, commitment to change, keeping moral commitments, and choosing moral goals.
Entry into the MRT program is by referral only. This program is funded by outside agencies including the SD Dept of Social Services Criminal Justice Initiative, the Unified Judicial System and the US Bureau of Prisons.
