<< Law Enforcement Division Home
The Pennington County Sheriff's Office, Rapid City Police Department, Rapid City Fire Department and Emergency Services Communications Center have combined resources to form the Special Response Team (SRT).
The Special Response Team serves the critical needs of law enforcement and emergency services throughout Western South Dakota by providing a specialized and highly-trained tactical operations unit. This unit meets the critical incident needs while recognizing the sacred value of human life.
The team has been called to the most trying and hazardous situations law enforcement officers and citizens can encounter. As the only major tactical team in western South Dakota, the SRT assists area cities and counties when necessary.
The team consists of several elements each with its own special responsibilities. These include:
- Crisis Negotiators
- Entry Team
- Communication Specialist
- Paramedics
- Sniper Team
Over the past several years, SRT has assisted in numerous calls involving the service of high-risk drug warrants, barricaded and suicidal subjects, the arrest of known members of the Hells Angels and Banditos Motorcycle Gang, Dignitary Protection for John Walsh, Ehud Barak (former Prime Minister of Israel), Benazir Bhutto (Former Prime Minister of Pakistan), and a variety of presidential and congressional dignitaries.
