Attendance Policy –Students will attend 100% of the classroom and laboratory sessions unless excused. Absences must be kept to a minimum for success of the student. Tardiness is considered as disruptive to students learning and the classroom environment, therefore the following standard has been adopted by this agency.

Students will be allowed no more than 3 (Three) excused absences. Students may request 5 (Five) tardies. Requesting more than 5 (Five) tardies will require a meeting with Course Coordinator and/or Lead Instructor to determine if the student should be allowed to continue in the program. 3 unapproved tardies (less than 20 minutes) will equal 1(One) unexcused absence.  1 unapproved tardy (20 minutes or longer) will equal ½ (Half) of an unexcused absence.  After 2 unexcused absences, the student in question will be subject to dismissal from the program.

Qualification for an excused absence will include illness, family emergencies, medical problems, military duty, and emergency service duty. Excused absences must be received prior to the scheduled start of the class on the same date or prior. Absence notifications received 60 (Sixty) minutes or more from the scheduled start of the class shall be considered an unexcused absence. Other absences that a student believes to be a legitimate absence which should be excused may be presented to the instructor for determination. All such determinations will then become the standard for all students.

Appropriate Dress –Students are required to wear socially acceptable clothing during classroom and lab sessions. Socially acceptable shall mean modest dress with no vulgar or obscene words, pictures, or other forms of expression on them. Certain procedures practiced within the parameters of education and training will require close contact with other students, which would also occur in the process of performance of the duties of an EMT, as such, students are encouraged to dress accordingly.

Uniforms representing a student’s service affiliation are permitted and appropriate for classroom and laboratory sessions.

Students who are participating in ambulance ride time or observation time shall abide by the requirements of the agency which the student is attending for the ride time or observation time. In absence of criteria from the respective agency, the following will be considered the standard: White, Grey, Black, or Navy Blue polo type shirt with no markings or design visible; Tan/Khaki, Black, Navy Blue pants or slacks – EMS style duty pants are acceptable; Black duty boot style footwear – no sport shoes or open toed shoes will be acceptable; and a black belt. If appropriate for the weather, students may have a plain, unmarked jacket or coat with them – jackets or coats from student’s service affiliation must be pre-approved.

Cell Phones –Casual cell phones usage will be absolutely prohibited during class time (this also includes practical classes). Cell phones shall be placed on silent and can only be utilized for emergency use (see next paragraph) or at the direction of the instructor, such as researching course material. A single request does not lift the usage ban for the remainder of the session nor extend to any future session. Anyone caught using a cell phone in any manor, ie. texting or talking, etc. will be asked to leave for the session and will receive an unexcused absence.

A student expecting a priority phone call (family, work, or other known issue) will be required to inform the instructor prior to beginning of class or at the time of the event if emergent. Student will then be allowed to answer such calls after exiting the classroom area. Student may make a brief request to the caller to “Hold-on, I need to get to another room” and will proceed to move out of the classroom before continuing the conversation.

Cell phones may be used on approved / scheduled breaks.

Emergency Service pagers will be allowed.

Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate your special needs.
