Treasurer’s Office Responsibilities
The Pennington County Treasurer’s Office handles multiple essential services for the community:

Tax Collection: We collect property taxes (real estate taxes), mobile home taxes, and special assessments.

Fund Management: Responsible for receiving and accounting for all Pennington County funds, while managing investments.

Motor Vehicle Services: We issue titles and licenses for new and used motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, ATV\off-road or snowmobiles, and boats.

Lien Services: Assisting in releasing and notating motor vehicle liens.

Title Assistance: Helping taxpayers apply for duplicate motor vehicle titles.

State Remittance: Submitting monthly remittance payments to the State of South Dakota.

Distress Warrants: Issuing distress warrants as required by law.

Important Information on Payments
No out-of-state checks, PMB address checks, or counter checks accepted. Send cashier's check or money order for all vehicle transactions made payable to Penn Co Treasurer .
Note: When you provide a check as payment, you authorize Pennington County to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account. Funds may be withdrawn from your account the same day we receive your payment. You will not receive your check back from your financial institution.
Property Tax Payments (Due April and October)
Payments are due the last business day of each month in April and October. If the last day of the month falls on a weekend, payments are due the next working day.
Payment Methods:
- Drop Box: Located at the south entrance of the County Administration Building (Kansas City Street side). Available during April and October until midnight MST on the last day of the month. Payments must include your Real Estate ID and phone number.

Online Payments: Available at www.pennco.org, until midnight MST on the last day of the month. Convenience fees apply.

Phone Payments: Pay by phone at 605-394-2163 (available until 4:30 PM MST).
Note: Delinquent taxes with a tax certificate must be paid with certified funds.

Motor Vehicle Registrations & Title Transfers
Office Hours:
Monday – Thursday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM MST
For title transfers, arrive by 5:00 PM to ensure completion before closing.
Additional Vehicle Registration Methods:
- Online: Visit mysdcars.sd.gov for services like reviewing and renewing your vehicle registration, purchasing new plates, and opting for email notifications.
- Self-Service Kiosks: Available for quick renewals. Use the touch screen with your South Dakota driver’s license, ID, or company renewal notice. Locations include:
- County Administration Building – 24/7 access.
- SD One-Stop Complex – 24/7 access.

SD Driver’s License Exam Station – Available during regular business hours.
In 2024 new trailer and commercial plates will be issued. If you use a DMV Now kiosk during a new plate year, you will receive a temporary registration to use in your vehicle until your new license plates arrive from the State as they will be sent to you through the mail.
